China announced at the World AI Conference in Shanghai the creation of the World AI Cooperation Organization. Headquartered in Shanghai and supported by over 70 countries, the body aims to set technical, ethical, and safety guidelines for artificial intelligence, with a particular focus on developing nations.
The initiative comes amid growing competition with the United States for leadership in a sector projected to reach US$ 4.8 trillion by 2033. In its announcement, the Chinese government criticized the concentration of technological power among a few players and called for multilateral governance.
