Brazil’s Financial Intelligence Unit (Coaf), under the Central Bank, has issued strict regulations governing the use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI) by its personnel. The directive, published in the Official Gazette on March 24, bans the processing of confidential and sensitive personal data through external GAI tools, including Microsoft Copilot. It also mandates that all AI use involving Coaf’s information assets be monitored, assessed by the IT Coordination Office, and approved by internal governance structures.
Coaf’s staff are now personally responsible for ensuring AI-generated content is appropriate, accurate, and non-discriminatory, while strictly adhering to data confidentiality rules. Improper use of generative AI will not exempt employees from accountability. Additionally, using corporate emails or credentials to access external GAI platforms is explicitly forbidden, underscoring Coaf’s commitment to safeguarding institutional data in the age of artificial intelligence.
