Meta Takes Legal Action Against Deepfake Networks in Brazil and China
Meta has announced legal actions against individuals and companies involved in creating and distributing deepfakes of celebrities used to promote fraudulent products and investment schemes on the company’s platforms. The initiative targets networks operating mainly in Brazil and China, which used AI-manipulated content to deceive users and boost illicit advertising campaigns.
Deepfakes hyper-realistic videos or images generated by artificial intelligence have increasingly been used in digital scams, especially in advertisements that exploit the image of public figures to lend credibility to promises of financial gains or unproven health treatments.
According to Alan Campos Thomaz, partner at Campos Thomaz Advogados, Meta’s move reflects a growing trend toward accountability and governance in the digital environment. “Cases involving deepfakes show how advances in artificial intelligence require new mechanisms for prevention, transparency, and accountability from platforms and from those who exploit these technologies fraudulently,” he says.
According to Alan, in addition to judicial enforcement, the issue reinforces the need for clearer regulatory frameworks for the use of generative AI, especially when it impacts image rights, consumer protection, and the fight against digital fraud. “The regulatory challenge is to balance technological innovation with effective mechanisms to protect against abuse,” he adds.
Meta’s legal offensive aims not only to hold those responsible for the fraud accountable, but also to discourage the use of deepfakes in deceptive advertising schemes, which are becoming increasingly sophisticated with the advancement of artificial intelligence.
