The Brazilian National Data Protection Authority celebrated its fifth anniversary with the release of an institutional report highlighting its consolidation as a key regulatory body for data governance in the country. The report underscores advances in regulatory output, responsive supervision, international cooperation and the promotion of a data protection culture. Notable achievements include the expansion of staff, the publication of regulatory instruments and guidance documents, and the improvement of technical and administrative mechanisms aimed at transparency and citizen engagement.
The event also marked the beginning of a new phase in which the Authority takes on expanded responsibilities, such as overseeing the Digital Child and Adolescent Statute and preparing to serve as the central regulator of Brazil’s forthcoming National Artificial Intelligence System. The protection of children and adolescents in digital environments, as well as the monitoring of emerging technologies — including artificial intelligence and biometric identification — remain strategic priorities. To support these expanded duties, the Authority plans to increase its permanent workforce through a public selection process, further strengthening its regulatory, supervisory and technical capacity.
