House Special Committee debates AI ecosystem and competitiveness

The Special Committee on Artificial Intelligence of the Brazilian House of Representatives held a public hearing  Tuesday (12) August to discuss the national innovation ecosystem and Brazil’s competitiveness in the field of artificial intelligence. US weighs investigation into Meta’s AI policies after Reuters report

A Reuters report revealed that Meta’s internal guidelines allowed AI chatbots to engage in “romantic or sensual” interactions with minors. Following the disclosure, the company confirmed the document’s authenticity but stated that the examples did not reflect its official policies and were subsequently removed. European Commission publishes list of signatories to the Generative AI Code of Practice

The European Commission has released the updated list of signatories to the Code of Practice for General Purpose AIs (GPAIs), an initiative designed to complement the EU’s Artificial Intelligence Act. While signing the Code is not mandatory, companies that voluntarily commit to it are deemed compliant with the bloc’s binding legal framework. Learn more.

China announced at the World AI Conference in Shanghai the creation of the World AI Cooperation Organization. Headquartered in Shanghai and supported by over 70 countries, the body aims to set technical, ethical, and safety guidelines for artificial intelligence, with a particular focus on developing nations. Report highlights tensions between data center expansion and socio-environmental justice in Brazil

The Laboratory for Public Policy and Internet (LAPIN) has released a report on the socio-environmental impacts of data center expansion in Brazil, a critical infrastructure for the development of artificial intelligence. According to the study, the country already hosts over 160 data centers and expects significant new investments, but the sector poses environmental challenges such as high energy and water consumption, emissions, waste generation, and impacts on traditional territories.
