The Laboratory for Public Policy and Internet (LAPIN) has released a report on the socio-environmental impacts of data center expansion in Brazil, a critical infrastructure for the development of artificial intelligence. According to the study, the country already hosts over 160 data centers and expects significant new investments, but the sector poses environmental challenges such as high energy and water consumption, emissions, waste generation, and impacts on traditional territories.

The assessment of six major companies revealed transparency gaps, unrealistic climate targets, and a lack of engagement with local communities. The report warns that, without stronger governance, corporate expansion may exacerbate inequalities and socio-environmental conflicts. It recommends measures to ensure that digital infrastructure growth is aligned with sustainability principles and social justice. Learn more.
