Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson has called for a halt in the EU’s artificial intelligence regulation rollout, describing the rules as “confusing” due to the lack of common technical standards. Speaking to Swedish lawmakers, he expressed concerns that pushing forward without clear standards could cause Europe to fall behind in technology or limit access to some AI applications in the European market. Kristersson plans to raise these concerns with EU leaders during a meeting in Brussels this week.
The push to delay the AI Act’s implementation is gaining momentum, with the European Commission’s technology chief suggesting a pause may be necessary if guidance is not ready. Swedish MEP Arba Kokalari praised Kristersson’s stance, advocating for a suspension of the timeline on certain parts of the regulation to give companies more time to comply. She also called for the AI Act to be included in the Commission’s digital simplification package expected by year-end.
