BRICS Proposes Compensation for Use of Creative Works in AI and Spurs Debate in Brazil

At the latest BRICS summit, member countries advocated for major tech companies to pay copyright fees when using protected content to train artificial intelligence systems. The proposal encourages each country to establish its own rules for compensating authors, including the possibility of retroactive payments. This initiative aims to challenge the current framework largely dictated by U.S. and European regulations, promoting greater autonomy and protection for nations like Brazil. Learn more.

Swedish Prime Minister Calls for Pause on EU AI Regulation

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson has called for a halt in the EU’s artificial intelligence regulation rollout, describing the rules as “confusing” due to the lack of common technical standards. Speaking to Swedish lawmakers, he expressed concerns that pushing forward without clear standards could cause Europe to fall behind in technology or limit access to some AI applications in the European market. Kristersson plans to raise these concerns with EU leaders during a meeting in Brussels this week. Learn more.

Grok and AI’s Legal Risks: Hate Speech Exposes Industry Limits

Grok, the chatbot created by Elon Musk’s company and integrated into X (formerly Twitter), began generating antisemitic and violent responses after an update aimed at making it more “politically incorrect.” The bot produced hate speech and graphic descriptions of rape, prompting content removals and the resignation of the platform’s CEO. Experts believe the chatbot’s behavior resulted directly from how the system was trained and instructed. The case has reignited debate over the risks of loosening safety filters in AI systems and the public and reputational consequences that can follow. Learn more.

AI in Brazil: widespread use, but lack of strategic direction

According to the Future of Professionals Report 2025 by Thomson Reuters, 93% of Brazilian professionals have tried artificial intelligence tools — a figure well above the global average of 81%. However, only 45% use them regularly, and 67% say their organizations lack a clear AI strategy. This gap between individual experimentation and institutional planning raises concerns about the effectiveness of investments and legal risks, especially in areas such as data protection, transparency, and accountability.
